TRAINING AND FACILITIES

I believe that it is critical for a dog to have good solid foundations in order to be a useful working dog, or a successful trial dog. Many of the problems I see when people ask for assistance from me, go back to gaps in the basic foundations of training. For myself, good foundations include a dog understanding pressure from stock and handler... how to give to it, and how to apply it, how to flank cleanly and correctly, how to balance and hold a line of pressure, how to have an attitude of respect and willing partnership with a handler. I endeavor to help a dog gain control of itself and have a correct approach to it's work, as I feel that training that primarily emphasizes external control of the dog by the handler results in dogs that are obedient around sheep, but don't necessarily know how to read or feel their sheep properly ...i.e. maintain and keep correct contact with their stock.

I feel that a good trainer will facilitate and make the most of a dog's inherent ability: enhancing its strengths, and supporting and assisting the dog with judicious handling in the areas of lesser capability. I believe that dogs develop at their own rate and that the training process must be tailored to the individual. There are no shortcuts to good foundations, and it is not something that can be rushed or forced to a schedule.

LESSONS

I am available for clinics or private lessons at arranged locations. For lessons with me at home, the time of year on a working farm may dictate the type of stock or field access I can offer, as seasonal variables such as lambing, haying, etc. may affect certain training opportunities. This also limits me in taking in outside dogs for training. I only take in two or three outside dogs at a time, and again, as seasonal circumstances allow.
