Breeding Philosophy

From Puppy to Working Dog "Ryan"

I strive to produce physically and mentally sound individuals, with a lot of natural aptitude for their work of moving and controlling stock. One of the advantages of living on a commercial sheep farm is that it gives me the opportunity to evaluate the dog's abilities to do real work in a variety of pastures with both large and small numbers of stock, and in chores such as chute and pen work. Although I trial my dogs, first and foremost, a dog must demonstrate and prove its ability to do the work at home before I consider using it in my breeding program.

Soundness of temperament is also important to me. I expect my dogs to interact in positive, well-adjusted ways with people and other dogs. They must be able to take the pressure of training to a competitive level plus stand the rigors of traveling and performing under pressure, consistent to their ability and training.

All my prospective breeding stock and puppies are screened by a licensed veterinary ophthalmologist for inherited eye diseases. I routinely x-ray hips before including stock in breeding programs. Puppies are sold with a written guarantee for their physical and mental soundness, as well as a guarantee for demonstrated interest and work potential. They can be returned at anytime over their lifetimes should they prove unsatisfactory for any reason.

I tend to favor strongly built dogs with good athleticism and substance. Other qualities I value include a strong desire to work, coupled with a willingness to work in partnership with me...i.e. a dog that naturally wants to please me. I like a dog with good sensibility and a capacity for self-control, with an honest approach to its work and training.

I breed primarily to meet my own needs, with litters 1-3 yrs. apart. I plan a breeding very specifically, and endeavor to place pups selectively in working and performance homes, often screened in advance from a waiting list.
