When the Victoria Salmon Kings were disbanded in 2011 in the midst of a Kelly Cup run, I was very upset. This was about the same time that Bill Shvetz, who had played for the Victoria Maple Leafs, died. I decided to turn my frustration and sadness into a good project. I am currently working on a book on the history of professional hockey in Victoria. Although I was not alive when the Victoria Cougars won the Stanley Cup, I did attend games in the 1950s, was a season ticket holder for the Victoria Maple Leafs, and also for the Victoria Salmon Kings. It is my hope that I will be able to interview management and players from the latter two eras and to find descendants of management and players for the earlier two teams. I am also working on an in-depth article on the Colonist Hotel which once stood across from Beacon Hill Park. It had a most interesting history the depths of which I am just beginning to discover. |
