PETER MCLELLAN - RIN 491
PETER MCLELLAN seems to have come to Canada in 1761,
on the vessel, "Hopewell" when a Colonel Alexander McNutt came with
some 50 families of (Ulster Scots) Irish from Londonderry, Ireland,
arriving in Halifax, Oct 9, 1761. His history and that of his
descendants has been researched and recorded by Robert F. McLellan, QC,
(RIN 578) (1914-1988) of Truro, NS, in his publication of 1985 that he
named "Peter Pioneer".and in a publication, " Great Village,( NS)
History that was published in 1960 by the GV Womens Institute. This
genealogy adds to and confirms the many notes recorded by Kate Doherty,
(RIN 28) (1868-1954) "The Family Tree of Peter McElman" by Henry R.
Biggins & Mary Ella (McElman) Biggins (1961) says, "the McLellan's
(or Maclellan or MacClellans) came originally from (Ross-shire),
Scotland.
It is believed that Peter McLELLAN is descended from Thomas McClelland,
Laird of Craignersh, Ayreshire, who was the Great Grandson of Sir
Thomas McClelland of Bombay, who completed the building of
Kirkeudbright Castle, (Dumfries & Galoway Co. Sct) in 1582.
Peter's ancestors emigrated to Londonderry, Ireland with the McElman's
in 1745, during the last Jacobite rebellion, and later to Halifax, NS,
where they prospered. Peter arrived in Great Village, NS, likely in the
fall of 1767, (said to be the first "Britisher" to winter there
following the expulsion of the Acadians). There is a story that the
McLellands and Dohertys were distant cousins in Ireland. They became
related again when Peters granddaughter, Agnes, (RIN 43) (1802-1878)
and William Doherty of Co. Donegal Ireland (RIN42) (1805-1874) married
in 1830.
There is a Memorial window for Peter McLellan in St. James United
Church in Great Village, donated by Judge Robert F. McLellan QC, of
Truro NS. Next to it is a window donated by the Doherty's in memory of
Robert Peel Doherty, his wife, Etta May and their son, Robin Peel
Doherty. There is also a plaque to their other son, Clinton Wilson
Kampton Doherty and daughter Fronz Davison (Doherty) Billingham,
presented by Hugh, (RIN 1) son of CWK Doherty. These windows were
dedicated by James Davison of Wolfville, NS. (RIN 711) The 1770 census
of the Township of Londonderry, NS show the McLellans to be
Protestants. Peter and family live in the Great Village area until they
moved to Ft. Lawrence about 1789/90. He had many land dealings in these
areas in conjuction with the Atkinsons and others. There have been a
number of spellings of the name (McClelan, MacLellan, McClellan,
McCleland, McLellan) in various documents recorded through the years.
R.F. McLellan donates a chapter to the subject in "Peter Pioneer".
McLELLAN is used primarily in these records.
From Kate Doherty's notes. - The traditional account of the origan of
the MacLELLANs (McLellans) is as follows: In the feud between the
Frasers and Lobans (Logons), the latter were defeated at the battle of
Drumderfit, near Kessock Ferry, and their leader, a brave worrior
called Gilligorm, was slain. Gilligorm left a posthumous son, born
among the Frasers, by whom his back was broken to prevent him from
growing up "strong and war like" enough to avenge his father. This son
was called Crotier MacGilligorm. He was educated at Beauly Priory, took
the Holly Order and moved to the West coast where he founded two
churches, one at Kilmiur on Skye and one at Glenlg.
This was about the beginning of the 13th Century. Crotier married, as
priests in the Highlands frequently did in those days, and had, with
other issue, a son called Gille Fhinnier, in honor of St. Finnian, and
whose descendant became known as the McLennans. They were at one time
numerous in Kintail in Ross-shire and tradition has preserved the name
of renowned warrior, Donald McLennan, who took a prominent part in the
great feud between Kintail and Glengary about 1600. The McLennans
appear to have been standard bearers of Kintail and at the great battle
of Aldearm in 1645, a certain Roderick MacLennan and his brother
Donald, were killed while bravely defending the banner of their Chief.
A wooden effigy of Gilligorm, the Clanns heroe, (possibly that taken
off his tomb) was long preseved and venerated in the House of
Drumderfit, but perished when the house burnt down in 1715, after
Sherriffmuir. There is a McLellan Castle in Kirkceudbright, Dumfries
& Galoway Co. SCT.
