SIMPLIFIED "VOWEL-CONSONANT-VOWEL"
(VCV) DICTIONARYAbout half of the words in the Basque vocabulary start with VCV and it was these words the Benedictine grammarians used to agglutinate and manipulate the new Indo-European vocabularies of Western Europe. Sixteen consonants and five vowels are used in the Basque language, which are used to create 25 different VCV's for each consonant. This allowed a total of 5x16x5 = 400 VCV's. The rolling RR was used as another consonant, adding 25 more VCV's, for a total of 425. Of these 425, ca 28 were not used (marked NA) and 79 rarely (marked with an asterisk). Therefore, of the 425 VCVs in total, 107 or 25%, were not or rarely used.
Most of the Basque words associated with these 79 VCVs are not found in Aulestia's dictionary. Therefore these words were listed in a separate appendix and included other missing words such as heberu or eberu meaning 'Hebrew tribe', as used in a Sumerian document from the city of Ur.
The grammarians, working in their scriptoria, seem to have made up cards for the VCV's which were used by them. Each card showed one VCV in large letters, with the diverse meanings written underneath in small letters. These cards were then laid out on large tables with the interlocking vowels forming pairs of cards. This provided the grammarians not only with an unlimited number of vocabulary possibilities but also creative entertainment. If a specific word needed to be assembled, one or more definitions or related comments were written about it and the appropriate word cards arranged. New words would often be accidentally invented which had not yet been called for, but could be the cause of many jokes. In this manner a very large vocabulary was invented with many words which previously had not existed. Their work on English created the largest vocabulary of any language.
The Benedictine monks and grammarians indeed had a right to be proud of their incredible accomplishment because today their product is the language of the world.
