| After
an exceptional life-time, filled with achievements across a broad
number of roles where he touched the lives of many; my wonderful
partner, “VIC” was eased from this life, after he went into sudden
renal failure, September 2004. Sadly, I was away competing with three
of his grandchildren at the time of his passing, attending the Western
Canadian Sheepdog Trial Finals in Saskatchewan, and the USBCHA Finals
in Sturgis, S.D.
“VIC” was a son of Berhow's
"NICK" and a maternal grandson of T.
Wilson's "ROY", and he embodied many of
the qualities represented in these two exceptional sires; both
nominated members to the ABCA Hall Of Fame.
I
acquired “VIC” as a ten month old pup, and he spent his first four
years with me, as my key partner in large flock work, while I was
employed in commercial shepherding contracts, and time and again, his
presence and power proved invaluable to me, as did his exceptional
stamina and sensibility. Later on in his career as a trial dog, he was
the top Open trial dog in B.C. in 1997, and then sire of the top Open
B.C. dog in '98. Further demonstrating his siring ability, he produced
the first B.C. dog to qualify and compete in the USBCHA National
Nursery and Open Finals. Despite limited breeding, he was grand-sire to
many extremely talented offspring such as Bill Berhow's former (now
retired) Open dog “RAIN”, John Wickson’s
“MEG”, Pat Pedersen’s “ROY” & “PATCH”, the Marroni’s “CAP” &
“MICK”, Lani Dorman’s “BLAIR”, and Martha’s “RYAN”, “GEOFF” &
“CERI”. His offspring went to cattle and sheep operations, and were
noted for both their natural ability and great trainability.
Throughout his lifetime, "VIC" was a
wonderful ambassador for the breed. He ran as the anchor dog on a local
flyball team, while working at home and while competing in sheepdog
trials in both Canada and the USA. He volunteered as a hospital therapy
dog for many years, and was featured in an SPCA- sponsored calendar on
Working Dogs. Late in life, he embarked on
a new career as a ‘Canine Facilitator’ in a special needs classroom in
the 100 Mile School District, from which he recently retired in the
spring of 2004.
“VIC” opened many doors for me, and as
a result, my life was richer than I could ever have imagined; he was an
incredible partner than touched every area of my life, and shaped me as
handler, competitor, breeder, and person. His passing has been softened
by the gifts he has given me, and in the legacy he has left myself and
others, in his offspring, who carry his inheritance and qualities to
working Border Collies far and wide… I was blessed to have shared my
life with “VIC”.
